'Thor: Love And Thunder' Set Photos Revealed!
Cinemas may still be closed in many parts of the world, but Hollywood is hard at work to make sure that there is enough material ready once the big screens can open up again.
At the End of January, filming for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder started both at Fox Studios and in Centennila Park in Sydney, Australia. This will be the fourth installment of the saga of the Nordic god (not counting his starring appearances in the Avengers movies) and the second one to be directed by Taika Waititi, who was also at the helm of Thor: Ragnarok (2017). Together with Jennifer Kaytin, Robinson Waititi is also responsible for the script, which is said to be based on the comic series The Mighty Thor by Jason Aaron. It remains to be seen how close the movie will follow the events of the comics, and whether they are merely an inspiration for the script.
Chris Hemsworth, of course, is back as the titular hero. As is Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, the new leader of the Asgardians.
When we last saw Thor at the end of Avengers: Endgame, he still had his beer belly, looked like a rumdum, and was about to leave Earth together with Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, and the rest of the Guardians of The Galaxy. It remains to be seen how long this “partnership” will last, but as Chris Pratt is also part of the main cast, we can at least assume that the two super-egos will (have to) spend some time together. Thor: Love and Thunder will take place before Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
Leaked photos of the shooting in Sydney show a relaxed-looking Hemsworth talking with Pratt. It definitely seems that Thor got back into training and is in really good shape again.
Also seen on the set was Sean Gunn (the younger brother of James Gunn), who will reprise his role as Kraglin, and a female alien who looks quite like Nebula (Karen Gillen).
Further joining the cast is Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, and Taika Waititi himself reprising his role as the alien Korg. New cast members include Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, (one of the main antagonists), and Matt Damon in a yet unconfirmed role.
After being absent from Ragnarok, Natalie Portman will be back as Jane Foster, Thor’s (ex-)girlfriend, who is somehow deemed worthy of picking up Mjolnir, Thor’s famed hammer. In the comics, as the Nordic god himself falls from grace, Foster becomes The Mighty Thor, a figure with incredible strength, speed, and self-healing powers. But once she puts the hammer down, her power fades quickly, as Foster - the human - is plagued by breast cancer. It is completely unclear whether the movie will even pick up this thread. It is rumored that Foster’s cancer could be caused by the Ether she had in her body in Thor: The Dark World. If Foster’s illness will be part of the movie, it will be interesting to see how Waititi, who is known for his sometimes weird humor, would deal with a serious matter like this.
It seems that it took Waititi quite some convincing to make Portman agree to return to the Marvel franchise, after she was quite unhappy with her role in The Dark World. But maybe the prospect of playing a superhero herself did the trick. Her involvement, as well as her role as the new carrier of Mjolnir, were officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.
Thor: Love and Thunder is currently slated for a release sometimes in 2022.
