This Prequel Character's Secret Past Will Be Revealed In 'Star Wars: Brotherhood'
Twitter lit up yesterday as news of a seemingly fan-favorite character, Dexter Jettster, who is also celebrating his 20th anniversary since first introduced in Attack of the Clones, was revealed to be a character in the upcoming book Star Wars: Brotherhood by Mike Chen.
The reveal of the character's involvement in the highly anticipated book came from an excerpt in a piece by James Whitbrook of i09's Gizmodo. The excerpt was a mere page from the book, but it provided some exciting bits of information that should get fans even more excited. First and foremost is the return of Dex, Obi-Wan's trusted source of information.

There's no denying nostalgia is an effective characteristic of the Star Wars franchise. So, in the post-saga years, and amid an expanding universe, it's exciting to see a returning character from a prequel movie. Especially one that had an air of mystery around him. Obi-Wan and Dex's conversation in Attack of the Clones may have been short, but it hinted at a long-standing friendship with a fascinating past, one that was never elaborated on.
That shrouded past is unveiled a little further in the excerpt provided. Obi-Wan apparently seeks out the help of his four-armed Besalisk friend at his diner involving his trip to Cato Neimoidia. Dex lets slip that he used to be in the black market in the past, and he had dealt with Neimoidians, claiming their minds are wired for calculations. What black market work Dex had been involved in is not elaborated on, but given his cryptic knowledge of poisonous darts from planets secretly wiped from the Jedi Archives, it's likely to be interesting.
There's also a mention of a little jaunt into the Unknown Regions with Obi-Wan when Obi-Wan was but a Padawan. If the Unknown Regions don't ring a bell, the long mysterious part along the galaxy's edge is primarily unexplored by the galaxy-at-large. It also happens to be the location of the mysterious Chiss Ascendancy, Grand Admiral Thrawn's home. Obi-Wan calls it a misadventure. Could there be a link between Obi-Wan, Dex, and Thrawn? While anything is possible regarding the Unknown Regions, we'll have to wait until May 10 to see if this mysterious trip is elaborated upon or if it's explored in future works.
Again, while only a page, it's full of exciting hints about some popular characters' histories and even an addition to the Star Wars canon. Another such clue comes when Dex makes mention of Obi-Wan's not-so-subtle romantic interest in Satine Kryze! Dex is trying to explain Neimoidian neutrality and how it differs from another kind of neutrality that Satine promotes. Obi-Wan stays suspiciously silent on the comment, and we all know why. We didn't know that she was who apparently gave him his hermit name: Ben! May 10 will be an exciting day in the Star Wars universe.
Other than those juicy tidbits, the only other reveal was that Obi-Wan likes his coffee (what they call caf) black. I don't think anyone is surprised that the honorable Obi-Wan Kenobi likes his coffee straight black. All business. What is hard to believe is how much we can glean from just one page in the upcoming book. If one page can provide that much exciting information, it stands to reason that the rest of the book is likely to be just as exciting, if not more.
Star Wars: Brotherhood by Mike Chen stars none other than Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in an adventure to Cato Neimoidia, the heart of the Trade Federation. With the Clone Wars now raging, Obi-Wan traveling to a neutral stronghold won't be easy, especially when he's sent to investigate an explosion blamed on the Republic that could draw the Neimoidians into the war. Throw into the mix a newly anointed Jedi Knight, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan's former apprentice, and the discovery that the explosion may have links to Asajj Ventress, and you have all the ingredients for an exciting adventure. It's one ripe with prominent personalities, mystery, and more to discover when it launches on May 10.
