When historians look back at 2023, Barbie and Oppenheimer will be tentpole films due to their theatrical and commercial successes after the broad commercial nose dive theatres took after the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, in this day and age, as streaming becomes the first medium used by consumers to enjoy beloved films or television programs, this provides movies a second opportunity to find success with audiences.

Nielsen ratings recently ranked Disney's Moana as the most streamed film in 2023, chalking up 11.6 billion minutes viewed on Disney+. Since the film’s release on streaming, audiences have streamed the movie for nearly 80 billion minutes, essentially watching the film 775 million times.

Encanto ranked second with 9.7 billion minutes watched on the same platform, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie took third place with 8.8 billion minutes through Netflix and Peacock.

Consumers continue streaming on video platforms rather than watching standard network television. Nielsen also released how, in 2023, audiences in the United States alone streamed 21 million years' worth of video programming.

Other notable titles that managed to make the list are Minions: The Rise Of Gru on Netflix with 7.1 billion minutes, Sing 2 also on Netflix with 6.7 billion minutes, Disney’s cultural juggernaut Frozen with 6.5 billion minutes on Disney+, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Disney+, Avatar: The Way of Water streamed on Disney+ and Max and finally Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix.
