There Are Two 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Games Currently In Production, Including A Mobile Game
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA)and The Legend of Korra will be able to dive back into the world shortly with the release of Avatar: Generations and a new console game called Quest for Balance, at least, perhaps enough to tide them over until the new movies from Avatar Studios arrive. IGN is reporting that Avatar: Generations will be a new mobile game developed in cooperation with Square Enix Montreal and Navigator Games, and the console game is being published by Game Mill Entertainment.
The console game, which will be available for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and 5, and Xbox, appeared on an Amazon Japan listing. The Switch version was listed on Nintendo’s website for a November 8 release date. IGN points out that Game Mill Entertainment is the same organization behind All-Star Brawl and Kart Racers. They also cite the publisher’s history and mantra of casual games, and a rather poorly received NERF first-person shooter game. Perhaps this Avatar game may not be as grand a game as fans hope. Aside from the release date, there is not much else revealed about the game barring a likely official announcement in the coming weeks.

The ATLA mobile game, on the other hand, perhaps has more potential for ambition, especially with a massive studio like Sony behind it. It will be a free-to-play, open-world role-playing game (RPG), a type of game not often seen on mobile platforms. The game will supposedly follow the stories of the original cast as they travel the world, possibly in an interactive recreation of the original series that aired on Nickelodeon.
Combat seems to be squad-based through “adventure sequences,” and the developers are promising a deep party customization system as well as upgrades, and the ability to recruit new heroes. The hero recruitment and squad-based battle elements sound similar to other mobile games like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, but an open-world approach to it would be a shift away from those styles of games. A DLC will also be released that explores the other stories fans are familiar with in the ATLA universe, such as Avatars Kiyoshi, Roku, and Aang’s successor, Korra.
There will be a soft launch of the mobile game this month in several countries, including Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and South Africa, with more regions and territories to receive the launch as the months go on. It will be available for both iOS and Android phones, and the soft launch period will be used to fine-tune the game from players’ feedback. The developers expressed a desire to cater to both hardcore fans of the ATLA universe as well as players who do not play RPG often.
A companion website was launched, but there is little there besides a banner image with the title and a “coming soon.” Interestingly, the website calls Avatar: Generations a tactical RPG. Seeing the words “tactical RPG” conjures images of games like Banner Saga, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and XCOM. It will certainly be interesting to see how the developers integrate an open-world element into that style.
