The Screen Actors Guild Awards Will Be Streamed On Netflix In 2024 Kicking Off A Multi-Year Deal
One of the forgotten effects and content cuts brought on by the formation of Warner Bros. Discovery is the dropping of the Screen Actors Guild Awards from TNT and TBS. It happened in May, just after scripted programming development had ceased at both networks but before the major purges began. When the dissolution was announced, a spokesperson assured viewers that finding a new home would be nothing to worry about. On the morning they announced this year’s nominees, they were ready to announce their game plan.
For 2023, on February 26, the ceremony will be streamed on YouTube. But not just any YouTube channel, or even their own dedicated channel, but Netflix’s. That’s because it’s essentially a stopgap. Starting in 2024, the Screen Actors Guild Awards will be broadcast live on Netflix itself, as the streaming service makes its push into live streaming. Their first foray, a Chris Rock standup special, is set for March 4, so the YouTube year makes sense for it not to cut the line when the standup special probably has formal language in the agreement as such. The standup special may also be lower risk and less strain for the systems involved than a prestigious award show. By next year, it’ll all have gotten worked out for a smooth-going night. It’s not known how long this deal is for. As a multi-year deal it at least guarantees 2025 and is spoken of with the future in mind.
The TNT partnership began in 1998, with the SAG Awards’ fourth ceremony. The first three ceremonies were broadcast on NBC beginning in 1995. TBS had begun its simulcast in 2007, so by 2022 even that aspect had been a long-standing part of the show.
