'The Punisher' Special Will Star And Be Written By Jon Bernthal

There are big things planned for The Punisher as the anti-hero made a return in Daredevil: Born Again. Eyes are now on the special that will focus on The Punisher, as portrayed by Jon Bernthal. Along with starring in the special, Bernthal will also be writing it. Something he very much wanted to do, allowing the character to arrive at where Marvel sees them as faithfully as possible.

“What I really appreciate with these guys is that they have their vision. They have an idea of where they want him to go and the world in which they want him to exist. But they’re really giving me agency on how we get him there and making sure that it’s honest and authentic and truthful.”

Of the process of getting the special off the ground, Bernthal said, “I went in, I pitched, I gave an outline before I even put pen to page, and I felt like I did not want them to just hand it to me… and they’ve held me accountable to every step along the way. I really want to earn this and I really want this to be good. The story that we’ve laid out is, I think, really special. It’s the visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred version of Frank where he’s going to turn his back to the audience. And nothing is easy and all violence has a cost, and we’re going to see that cost. I’m grateful that they’re letting me go to the places that I really want to go.”

Daredevil: Born Again is currently streaming on Disney+, with episodes arriving every Tuesday until April 15.
