A glorious classic of the fictional world is making a return to Marvel Comics: the vampire trope. It’s not a cliche effort, no matter what image the word vampire might invoke. The fan-favorite misfit team, The Forgiven, is making their first return as the main characters since their 2011 debut.

With writer Tim Seeley and artist Sid Kotian at the helm, SPIDERMAN: UNFORGIVEN #1 will be the first of 3 sagas to kick off the new era of the vigilante team. To quote Marvel, “the team will confront a new foe with a desire to transform vampires into their most powerful and violent selves.” This storyline will continue in X-MEN: UNFORGIVEN #1 and AVENGERS: UNFORGIVEN #1, further cementing the group’s place in Marvel history.

The coming series will challenge readers in the best of ways.  Seeley has teased the run, stating that this uniting of vampires and heroes will expose “the stark differences and surprising similarities” between those who fight evil and those who literally have to carry the curse of it.  He says that this run will remind readers of the monsters that lurk in the heart of Marvel’s universe.

The Forgiven debuted in Fear Itself: Hulk vs Dracula (2011). Gathered by their leader, Raizo Kodo, they wanted to help control the Hulk, who was rampaging due to outside influences. Even though Dracula saw them as enemies, they aided in the fight against the possessed Hulk. Sometime after the fight, they battle Valkyrie over a magical item before giving it up. Their final noteworthy appearance came with the X-Men, who they fought, and mutant assassins, who were hired to kill Raizo.

The Forgiven has quite the legacy with some big names already. This effort will be a reintroduction for the characters to the Marvel Comics Universe, opening the door for exciting new storylines and interactions. 2023 has quite the massive project to look forward to, so make sure you keep an eye out for Unforgiven!
