The Most Powerful Weapon In All Of 'Star Wars' Could Be Introduced In 'The Mandalorian' Season 3

Star Wars stories have such categorizations as canon and Legends. Our storytellers can lift and shift elements from Legends into the canon. Writers have returned whole planets such Mimban, let alone characters such as Grand Admiral Thrawn, to canon status with the strike of their keyboards. The Mandalorian Season 3 presents the opportunity to return one of the most incredible weapons out there back to canon status.

The Mandalorian Season 2 occurs in 9 ABY. There is a non-canon adventure in the Legends story, Jedi Search, starring Han Solo, Chewie, and future Jedi Kyp Durron, which occurs in 11 ABY. While parts of the story would be difficult to impossible to retrofit into the main storyline, one particular element could be fun to see.

The trio stumbles upon a super-secret, former Imperial research-and-development installation while escaping the Moruth Doole controlled spice mines of Kessel. They soon realize that this facility, the Maw Installation, is where scientists designed the Death Star. This site was lost and forgotten after Grand Moff Tarkin’s demise.

The old Imperial leaders were dead or scattered; the Maw Installation continued its work unabated. Maw scientists created yet another weapon of immense destruction, their pièce de résistance. The scientists designed the Sun Crusher to take out an entire solar system. It was a truly terrifying improvement over their planet-killing Death Star.

The principle behind it was ingenious and straightforward as far as fictional weapons go. Turn a solar system’s sun into a system-destroying weapon. The Sun Crusher is the size of a small spaceship. Its size belies its capabilities. This ship causes the sun(s) of a system to go supernova, thus destroying the entire system in the process.

In the book, Han and Chewie convince Qwi Xux, chief scientist of the facility, to help him steal the ship. They then team up with fellow escapee and future Jedi Durron to steer the spaceship out of the factory. A Force-sensitive person like Durron is key to getting the Sun Crusher out of the Maw Installation. A system of black holes hides the Maw Installation incredibly well.

The book was written when there was no promise of any other TV or movie content for the Star Wars franchise. Books and comics were all fans had. The authors did not let us down. They let their imaginations run wild with the types of in-universe ships and creatures they created. Movie magic and digital effects of the day would not do such a ship justice.

Bring The Sun Crusher Into The Mandalorian

Nowadays, technology allows us to transform these ideas to the screen. It would be outstanding to see this ship come to life. The timeline syncs up perfectly with The Mandalorian Season 3.

We have the added bonus of a similar Force-sensitive being whose powers are still raw, just like Durron’s, though this fan would love to Durron come to life at some point, too. While we have only ever seen Grogu toy with stormtroopers when angered, we know his species is capable of so much more. Master Yoda once pulled an entire X-Wing out of a thick swamp. Even if Grogu and Master Skywalker do not discover it, there are others who would benefit from its discovery.

Moff Gideon is precisely the type of character to go looking for ultimate weapons like the Sun Crusher. You can tell by his reaction to watching Skywalker slash his way through the station that Gideon is current on his knowledge of legends and lore within his timeline.

Season 3 should expand upon Gideon’s vision. He is currently trying to put together an army from the ashy remnants of the Empire. An ultimate weapon is a must-have accessory for anyone trying to re-conquer the galaxy. He can’t do it with the Darksaber alone.

The Sun Crusher would be fun to see onscreen. The Mandalorianshow fits the timeline for its introduction pretty well. What other currently non-canon characters or ideas do you think belong in Season 3 ofThe Mandalorian?
