The Last of Us debuted on HBO and HBO Max last week with 4.7 million viewers. It was the third most-watched premiere for HBO since 2010. House of the Dragon received 9.986 million viewers in its debut last year and Boardwalk Empire got 4.8 million in 2010. HBO said that the initial numbers normally represent 20% to 40% of the total viewers for each episode. That means HBO can expect somewhere between 12 and 24 million viewers for this episode in total. For comparison, the season two debut of Euphoria, one of HBO’s biggest hits, received about half as many viewers.

Produced and written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us is based on the PlayStation game of the same name. Both Mazin and Druckmann are elated at positive reception:

“We are overjoyed to see how many fans, both old and new, have welcomed The Last of Us into their homes and their hearts.”

The show takes place about twenty years after the collapse of civilization. It is about two survivors, Joel and Ellie, who have to make a cross-country journey. Joel thought transporting the 14-year-old Ellie would be a simple job, but their lives are in danger at every turn. The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal alongside Murray Bartlett, Gabriel Luna, Nick Offerman, Nico Parker, Bella Ramsey, and Anna Torv.

The Last of Us has garnered critical acclaim as pointed out by Paul Tassi of Forbes:

“Even getting my hopes way, way up ahead of the premiere of The Last of Us last night, even counting the series as one of my favorites in video game history, it actually exceeded my expectations.”

It looks like HBO has another bona fide hit on its hands.

A new episode of The Last of Us airs every Sunday at 9:00 PM Eastern.
