As first reported in December and promised Friday with the release of the poster, the first trailer for The Flash was released on Sunday for Super Bowl LVII, appearing about a half hour before kickoff. It’s the first piece of marketing in a year, since the teaser for DC films in 2022, shortly before it and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were moved out of 2022. How well can it win over audiences with such an embattled star? That remains to be seen, but it’s been over 8 years since the film’s announcement, and will be over 5 years past its original release date.

The trailer sees Barry Allen (played by Ezra Miller) fully suited as he arrives at his home, presumably the night his mother Nora was killed. We still don’t know whether the Reverse Flash is still the culprit, but it would make the most sense. There’s a lot of talk about changing timelines of course, and Barry doesn’t want to lose his mother again. He startles her by touching her shoulder and he’s soon confronting a second version of himself. These two Ezras seem to be together for most of the movie.

Ben Affleck’s Batman is seen twice in the trailer. First, he’s suited up on his Batbike early in, before appearing as Bruce and talking to Barry, warning about the destruction his attempt to “fix” could cause. This Flashpoint world has no metas, but it does have Supergirl (Sasha Calle) detained instead of Superman, and apparently, an invasion by Zod (Michael Shannon) is going to be the world-devastating event that replaces the war between the Atlanteans and the Themyscirans in the source material.

It appears that Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne Batman (who indeed gets to say the line) is the ally Batman for the story, as opposed to Thomas Wayne, who survives instead of his son in the source material (Martha becomes Joker). They’ve got quite the fights in them; it’s looking to be quite the involved story. From the source material and the announcement of the future DC Universe two weeks ago, we have some idea of how the story will go, but the journey still contains plenty of mystery. The Flash will be released in theaters on June 16.
