The first trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4 dropped yesterday, and in keeping with the previous three films, it looks like a lot of high-action fun with an all-star voice cast to boot. Let’s discuss some cast highlights:  Ke Huy Quan voices Han, Jackie Chan returns as Monkey, Dustin Hoffman reprises his role as Shifu, Ian McShane returns as Tai Lung, and Jack Black is back as Po. Newcomers to the cast include James Hong as Mr. Ping, Viola Davis as the antagonist, Chameleon, and Awkwafina as Zhen.

The trailer opens with Shifu telling Po that “it is time to take the next step on [his] journey.” Po stumbles up the stairs with concern for no longer being the Dragon Warrior, but alas, it is time to “advance to Spiritual Leader.” The next shot captures Po meditating beneath the cherry blossom tree for inner peace. The following scene finds him battling a stingray who delivers the line, “Keep your surf off my turf.” The hero continues his meditation, which naturally leads to the inner monologue dinner menu – “peas in a sesame soy glaze,” to be exact. He opens his eyes in defeat.

Enter the villains… Chameleon, a powerful sorceress, summons Tai Lung. A battle ensues. Tai Lung is strong but quickly loses the fight as the Chameleon appears to snatch his essence out of his body with her tongue. In the next scene, Zhen explains to Po the dangerous situation brewing with this shapeshifting chameleon. Zhen begins leading Po to her. Thus begins the hero’s journey with them up against an entire army. First, they must find some folks to bring along to even the odds.

Po notices there are wanted posters with Zhen’s picture when they arrive in town. Next, Po meets an adorable trio of bunnies and warns them to be careful of the fireworks they are playing with. They morph into rabid rabbits and attack Po, then return to cuteness, saying in unison, “Violence makes our tummies tingle.” Po convinces the armed militia of critters to join the fight. What will the battle plan be? “Quick and painless or slow and painful?” The bunny younglings vote for the latter. Upon meeting Chameleon, Po looks at himself in a mirror as she shifts into a larger version of him – “Skadoosh.” Kung Fu Panda is expected to hit theaters on March 8, 2024!
