Despicable Me keeps coming and doesn’t show any signs of stopping. Reports have indicated that the combined total box office numbers of every Despicable Me film and Minions spin-off film has reached five billion dollars, the first animated franchise to ever reach that milestone. This cements its status as the most successful animated film franchise of all time. As the film series continues to grow, we can expect new entries in the series, maybe another Minions spin-off. However, it’s hard to say what comes next at this point. We’ll just have to speculate and wait for Universal Pictures to release an official statement.

The Despicable Me series dates back to 2011, with the release of the first film. It starred Steve Carrel as Gru, a down on his luck supervillain being overshadowed by a younger rival. The film centered around him adopting three orphans as part of a larger scheme to steal the moon, only to grow attached to them. Produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, the film would be a massive success, eventually spawning the most successful animated film franchise of all time, with Despicable Me 4 being released on the Fourth of July weekend. Gru’s Minions, in particular, became a pop culture icon, even if some have grown sick of them.
