'The Book Of Boba Fett' Release Date Revealed

When Boba Fett made his triumphant return to live-action in The Mandalorian season 2, fans were very satisfied, to say the least. Some were already used to the idea of Boba Fett surviving the sarlacc pit in Legends, but whether or not this happened in canon was put into question for a while. We knew for several years that, at the very least, his armor made it out. But of course, we now know for sure that he survived.

And then fans were even more surprised by the stinger at the end of the season finale last year, in which Boba Fett and Fennec Shand arrive at Jabba's Palace, killing Bib Fortuna and taking over the place. We then got text assuring us that The Book of Boba Fett would be coming to Disney+ in December 2021. Not many viewers saw this coming, given that, in the weeks leading up to this finale, we got an announcement on Disney Investor Day of the upcoming slate of Disney+ shows that would be made for Star Wars, and The Book of Boba Fett was nowhere to be seen. This was something Disney and Lucasfilm kept up their sleeves until the end of the finale.

Now, it looks like we finally have an official release date. The first episode of this series will be coming out on Wednesday, December 29. For some (like myself), it may be surprising that the show is premiering so late in December. Personally, I thought we would get maybe three or four of the episodes released in December. But when one takes a step back and looks at the Disney+ slate, it all makes sense.

Marvel Studios has been releasing various Disney+ shows this year. The next one coming up is the Hawkeye TV series. This is set to premiere on November 24, with a season consisting of six episodes. The weekly schedule would place that show's season finale on December 29, the same date that The Book of Boba Fett will premiere. So on that day, viewers who follow both franchises can finish Hawkeye and then begin The Book of Boba Fett. It feels like an odd choice having both released on the same day. I get the feeling that maybe the original plan was for there not to be overlap, and then Disney decided to have these overlap anyway since December 29 is still in December, and a January premiere for The Book of Boba Fett would have contradicted the text at the end of The Mandalorian season 2. This is my own personal speculation, of course.

Here is some information from StarWars.com regarding the upcoming series:

"The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.

The Book of Boba Fett stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen. Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson are the executive producers. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck serve as co-executive producers, with John Bartnicki producing and John Hampian as co-producer."

This is not really anything that we did not already know, but it is nice to see that The Book of Boba Fett marketing machine is starting to ramp up. On November 12, we will be getting a special about the origin and legacy of the Boba Fett character, and some believe we may get a trailer then. For now, all we can do is wait.
