The Best Unscripted Moments In The MCU

It’s hard to believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has endured as long as it has. From humble beginnings with Iron Man way back in 2008, the MCU has delivered a multitude of memorable and iconic moments. And with such a long list of talented directors at the helm, it’s not hard to imagine why. But sometimes some of the best scenes in the franchise come when the director takes a step back and gives the actor freedom to improvise. From accidental to ad-libbing, here's a few of the best unscripted moments from the MCU.

Wong’s Nickname

Benedict Cumberbatch’s first outing as the Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange was a rousing success. Its inventive and otherworldly visuals wowed audiences, but a lot of its success came down to the chemistry between the characters on set, namely the man himself and Wong. Played by the aptly named Benedict Wong, Wong was initially abrasive when he met Strange and doubted his potential. In one of their first scenes together, Strange calls Wong Beyoncé. It was a strange choice of an insult, and as it turns out, it was totally off the cuff. The director liked it so much that he not only kept it, but also added the scene of Wong listening to Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" to play off of the joke.

The State of Gamora

The hype surrounding the ambitious crossover that was Infinity War cannot be overstated, and rightfully so. It was the culmination of a decade of cinematic storytelling coming to a climax. But even with such high stakes, the actors involved were bound to let their creative sides show. One such incident was during the scene where what’s left of the Guardians of The Galaxy face off against Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. It’s a tense scene, as both sides think the other is working for the villain, Thanos. When questions arise about the whereabouts of Gamora, where and who, Drax cuts in and asks, “Why is Gamora.” It’s a fittingly bonkers line from Drax but it was also improvised by Dave Bautista.

The Rage of Odin

Following his unsanctioned invasion of the home of the Frost Giants, Jotunheim, Thor is being scolded by his father Odin. It’s not the first time his arrogance has gotten him on his father’s bad side, but it quickly becomes apparent this time that he may have crossed the line. Odin is furious with his son, and as he berates him, Loki, Thor’s adopted brother, tries to step in and smooth things over. But as he goes to talk, Odin’s not having it and lets loose an angry growl at the trickster god. Loki’s stunned reaction to the outburst is genuine, as it was an unscripted but in-character reaction from Odin’s actor Anthony Hopkins.

Hawkeye Wants to Shoot Quicksilver

When they first meet in Age of Ultron, Hawkeye and Quicksilver’s relationship can be described as rocky at best. It takes the arrival of a genocidal AI to get the two to work together, but Quicksilver lives up to his name and is quick to get under Hawkeye’s skin. During the battle with Ultron, Quicksilver zips by Hawkeye and taunts him to pick up the pace. In response, Hawkeye grumbles angrily to himself that he could likely get away with shooting the speedster and pass the blame to Ultron. The rant is funny enough in and of itself, but it’s even funnier when you realize that the scene is actually Jeremy Renner responding after he thought the scene was over. The cameras were still rolling, and the resulting hilarity made the final cut.

Business Acquaintances

The arrival of Thor: Ragnarok greatly changed the character of Thor in the MCU. Under the direction of Taika Waititi, the character was reinvented and allowed Chris Hemsworth to stretch his comedic muscles. In fact, most of the cast was encouraged to let loose, resulting in a multitude of unscripted moments. Among the most famous, though, would have to be when Thor encounters Hulk in the arena. The spectators are expecting a blood bath, so they’re completely caught off-guard when Thor express his joy at seeing the green goliath. “He’s a friend from work!” It’s so memorable it even made it into the trailer. As it turns out, the scene was improvised by Hemsworth at the request of a boy he met in the Make a Wish program.
