The 2021 Razzies: A Retrospective
Well, I, uh... did okay.
This did not go the way that I expected it to in several ways. To see how I did, look here. My certainty that Dolittle was going to clean up did not happen in the slightest. Instead, the Razzies took a more... political route.
Worst Picture
365 Days
Absolute Proof
Dolittle
Fantasy Island
Music
What I voted for: Dolittle
Who I predicted: Dolittle
What won: Absolute Proof
I should have pegged that a movie about the controversial 2020 US presidential election would lend itself more to getting an award like this. Dolittle was undeniably bad, but this is the... funnier pick?
Worst Director
Charles Band--All 3 Barbie & Kendra movies
Barbara Bialowas & Tomasz Mandes--365 Days
Stephen Gaghan--Dolittle
Ron Howard--Hillbilly Elegy
Sia--Music
Who I voted for: Stephen Gaghan
Who I predicted: Stephen Gaghan
Who Won: Sia
I whiff again on a Dolittle prediction. Dang.
Worst Actor
Robert Downey Jr.--Dolittle
Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy)--Absolute Proof
Michele Morrone--365 Days
Adam Sandler--Hubie Halloween
David Spade--The Wrong Missy
Who I voted for: Michele Morrone
Who I predicted: Mike Lindell
Who won: Mike Lindell
I tie this one together with the Worst Picture win. It was more poking fun at the political aspect of everything instead of awarding the worst of the worst.
Worst Actress
Anne Hathaway--The Last Thing He Wanted & The Witches
Katie Holmes--Brahms: The Boy II & The Secret: Dare to Dream
Kate Hudson--Music
Lauren Lapkus--The Wrong Missy
Anna-Maria Sieklucka--365 Days
Who I voted for: Anna-Maria Sieklucka
Who I predicted: Kate Hudson
Who won: Kate Hudson
I didn't vote for Hudson, but I did predict that she'd be the one to actually take the award. I was right about something, at least.
Worst Supporting Actor
Chevy Chase--The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee
Rudy Giuliani--Borat, Subsequent Movie-Film
Shia LeBeouf--The Tax Collector
Arnold Schwarzenegger--Iron Mask
Bruce Willis--Breach, Hard Kill & Survive the Night
Who I voted for: Arnie
Who I predicted: Rudy Giuliani
Who won: Rudy Giuliani
This is another example of who I voted for not being the person that I knew would win. I put this in the "bashing politics" category as well.
Worst Supporting Actress
Glenn Close--Hillbilly Elegy
Lucy Hale--Fantasy Island
Maggie Q--Fantasy Island
Kristen Wiig--Wonder Woman 1984
Maddie Ziegler--Music
Who I voted for: Maddie Ziegler
Who I predicted: Maddie Ziegler
Who won: Maddie Ziegler
Finally one where everything lines up. Close and Wiig were never going to win, and the two Fantasy Island actresses didn't have a clear "winner" between the two.
Worst Screenplay
365 Days
All 3 Barbie & Kendra Movies
Dolittle
Fantasy Island
Hillbilly Elegy
Who I voted for: Dolittle
Who I predicted: Dolittle
Who won: 365 Days
Was Dolittle not actually as bad as I thought it was, or was everything just worse?
Worst Screen Combo
Rudy Giuliani and His Pants Zipper--Borat Subsequent Movie-Film
Robert Downey Jr. & His Utterly Unconvincing “Welsh” Accent--Dolittle
Harrison Ford & That Totally Fake-Looking CGI “Dog”--Call of the Wild
Lauren Lapkus & David Spade--The Wrong Missy
Adam Sandler & His Grating Simpleton Voice--Hubie Halloween
Who I voted for: Adam Sandler
Who I predicted: Rudy Giuliani
Who won: Rudy Giuliani
He won here for the same reason he won Worst Supporting Actor.
Worst Remake, Ripoff, or Sequel
365 Days
Dolittle
Fantasy Island
Hubie Halloween
Wonder Woman 1984
Who I voted for: Dolittle
Who I predicted: Dolittle
Who won: Dolittle
Another one where everything lines up. It had to win something, right?
Once again, I bemoan the absence of the Razzie redeemer award, but I had hoped that I would do a little bit better when actually predicting what would win. 6/9 isn't the worst in terms of accuracy, but the Razzies didn't pick on Dolittle nearly as much as I thought they would. In terms of voting for the winner, I went 2/9. Yeesh.
Well, at least I did better with the Oscars. My thoughts on that are coming soon...
