It’s no secret that Taika Waititi is a rising star in the cinematic universe. His skills at directing have earned him some of the most memorable and entertaining movies to come out of Hollywood. From smaller budget movies like Eagle vs. Shark and What We Do In The Shadows, to mainstream attention after Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, his particular sense of humor and storytelling has captured the attention of the world.

However, perhaps like George R.R. Martin, the rocket to global admiration may be too much for the director to handle. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Taika Waititi talks about his upcoming Star Wars film, and how it is not that easy of a process.

In the interview, when author Brian Hiatt brings up a tweet Taika made about doing a story on Chewbacca’s mother, the actor/director hints at a probable source in some potential delays or the reason why it’s taking so long. He talks about how loved the established characters are, and to do a story on something that links to them would take so much research, to do it justice would take time he doesn’t have. The man is notorious for a busy schedule. He is currently writing a Star Wars movie, as well as directing an adaptation of a documentary about the American Samoa soccer team’s World Cup performance back in 2001. In addition to that, he is active in the production of What We Do In The Shadows on FX, as well as Reservation Dogs. But he does address the notion that if you go too far from the elements that have been established in Star Wars, is it even Star Wars anymore?

Hiatt addresses the historical fact that there are several abandoned projects in the Star Wars trash bin, and Taika doesn’t slough off the possibility. He wants it to be right and make sense, as well as have it fit his particular style. If not, he says, it could turn out poorly. Essentially he says it will be ready when it’s ready, and leaves open the possibility that if the studio doesn’t like how long it’s taking, or the final result, then it could go the way of other forgotten Star Wars projects.

Taika Waititi and lightsabers

He has a valid point. With the Skywalker Saga complete, there are new stories to explore, but some are starting to realize there’s a dilemma in the Star Wars universe: how far does a story have to detach itself from the major elements we’ve seen so far before it’s still considered Star Wars but can also stand on its own as a story without having to attach itself to the major characters or story arcs? Some think there needs to be some distancing from the established arcs and characters, to start some new stories within the Star Wars galaxy. Perhaps Taika Waititi’s film could be the start of that, cinematically speaking. Technically, an argument could be made that the High Republic era is doing that, but even then some characters have rather long lives, like Yoda, within that era.

There’s no doubt that Taika Waititi wants to do the film due justice, and it’s doubtful there are many fans out there that would take issue with that. As more information about the film comes out, be sure to visit Culture Slate to read about it.
