Between Justice League (2017) and Black Adam, there was a large period of uncertainty surrounding how DC would go forward with Superman and whether or not Henry Cavill would still be in the role. This was followed by a headless cameo in Shazam, a silhouetted appearance in Peacemaker, and the greenlighting of a film penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates to star a black male in the role. With Superman: Legacy officially in pre-production, this has led to the question: What happened to Coates’ Superman film?

As it currently stands, the film is still happening. Coates and J.J. Abrams are still hard at work at making their vision come to light. If the film does come to fruition, James Gunn confirmed that it will not be part of the DCU. Rather, the film will join the ranks of Phillips’ Joker and Reeves’ The Batman under The Elseworlds label of future DC offshoot projects.

Speaking to Gizmodo’s io9, Gunn stated:

“That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”

Coates has not commented on the details of the script, so little to nothing is currently known about the project aside from the fact that it’s happening. Superman fans should be happy to hear that they’re in safe hands with the writer, as this is not his first foray into superhero writing. Coates has previously written comics for Black Panther and Captain America. Word has been scarce since the project’s initial announcement, but Gunn’s statement confirms that, currently, Coates’ Superman lives.
