Sony Picture’s Bad Boys 4: Ride or Die brought in $53 million in its opening weekend. Friday’s opening day combined with previews from Thursday night totaled $21.6 million, bringing a boost to the summer box office. The movie was initially predicted to bring in $48 to $50 million, so it’s already doing better than expected. The film stars Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, in his first major acting job since the infamous Oscars slap. Ride or Die follows the characters of Miami cops Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) on the run while they try to clear the name of their late police captain after a link is established between him and drug cartels.

The previous film in the franchise Bad Boys for Life was released in January 2020 and earned $62 million in its opening weekend. The film grossed $426 million at the global box office before theaters shut down during the pandemic. Sony has established their presence at the summer box office. In addition to the fourth Bad Boys film, their Garfield movie is estimated to earn $10.2 million. Another family film, If, comes in third with an estimated $8.5 million. The Watchers, directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and produced by her father M. Night Shyamalan looks to earn $7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, taking the last spot in the top five, is expected to earn $5.5 million.
