The Boy and the Heron is a semi-autobiographical fantasy set in 1943, during the Pacific War, focusing on twelve-year-old Mahito, who encounters a mysterious world shared by both the living and the dead after the death of his mother. The film was written and directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, and produced by Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with the score being composed by longtime collaborator Joe Hisaishi, and its theme song “Spinning Glove” is written and performed by Kenshi Yonezu, known for his opening themes for anime like Chainsaw Man and My Hero Academia. The English Dub was written by Stephanie Sheh, best known for her voice work on Naruto and Sailor Moon, and directed by Michael Tremain Sinterniklaas.
Amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the English Dub for The Boy and the Heron was produced in compliance with SAG-AFTRA’s Foreign Dubbing Agreement.
The Boy and the Heron releases in theaters and IMAX nationwide on December 8th.
