Studio Ghibli's Founder Hayao Miyazaki Will Release A New Film Next Summer
Studio Ghibli has recently announced via Twitter that legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki will return to the helm with the release of his latest film, tentatively titled How Do You Live? Slated for a July 14, 2023 release in Japan, How Do You Live? will be Miyazaki’s first film in over a decade since The Wind Rises was released in 2013. Despite Miyazaki's declared intention to retire that same year after the release of The Wind Rises, he apparently started work on How Do You Live? in 2016.
Despite the first glimpse at the film in Studio Ghibli’s tweet, virtually nothing else is known about the upcoming film. It appears the film will be based on the 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino of the same title (Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka in Japanese), which follows a 15-year-old boy named Koperu in pre-war Japan. The narrative moves between Koperu’s story as he ponders on the best way to live, and his uncle’s journal entries in which he advises Koperu on the world. Miyazaki was reportedly moved by the novel when he was younger. It is unclear how much the new film will be based on the book.
