Hayao Miyazaki, the beloved Japanese animator some have likened to Walt Disney, is nearing retirement. Before he does, however, he will have one more movie to add to his pantheon of animated films that include Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, among many others. The release of this movie comes with a twist. His final film, How Do You Live, loosely inspired by Japanese author, Genzaburo Yoshino, is a coming-of-age story about a young boy after his father's death and will be released with no trailer or promotional materials. However, the studio did release a mysterious poster for the movie created by lead producer, Toshio Suzuki, back in December.

Other than that, however, there have not been plot summaries, no voice cast list, or nothing about the film’s setting or characters provided by the studio. In keeping in line with Ghibli’s ongoing attempts to limit the merchandising of their movie characters to not overexpose them, Toshio Suzuki argued that films nowadays reveal too much through their multiple trailers and that they want people to come into the movie with no preconceptions.

Additionally, Miyazaki’s comment about how much he liked Suzuki’s poster helped inspire this new approach. Suzuki added that he believes that this is what moviegoers latently desire. How Do You Live is set for release in Japan on June 14, 2023.  U.S. and international release dates have not been set as of yet.
