Steven Moffat Issues Public Plea For Benedict Cumberbatch And Martin Freeman to Return To 'Sherlock' For Season 5
Even with discussions beginning on a second season of his BBC/Netflix series Inside Man, it seems Sherlock creator Steven Moffat is game to return to 221B Baker Street.
On the BBC’s Today, Moffat confirmed he’s interested in doing a fifth series of the 2010-2017 hit that starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson. Of course, Moffat’s condition for committing is that they reprise, and in his appearance, plead with them to do so. Moffat knows they’re quite busy, having settled into their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles as Doctor Strange and Everett Ross. Freeman also stars on Breeders which airs on FX. Last November, Cumberbatch said to Esquire he is keeping himself somewhat open to a possible fifth Sherlock series. Freeman likes to let things end, but can’t pass up good ideas or good scripts, and feels everyone must come back for it to work.
In 2022, the former Doctor Who showrunner had Inside Man, which stars David Tennant and Stanley Tucci which premiered in October on Netflix. He also had a more traditional The Time Traveler’s Wife adaptation for HBO, after having used the original story as inspiration for “The Girl in the Fireplace” and the River Song storyline. The series was canceled in July and removed from HBO Max in December.
