'Star Wars' Tie-In Book Further Confirms Darth Plagueis Tried To Make A Force Dyad With Sidious
With news coming out recently about what exactly the Force Dyad is, which was introduced in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars has again revealed a big part to the Force Dyad. Interestingly enough, it includes Darth Plagueis, Emperor Palpatine’s master.
The recent Star Wars tie-in book, titled Secrets of the Sith, talks briefly about the Force Dyad, it's history, what it is exactly, and how it works. Secrets of the Sith naturally reveals a lot about Darth Sidious and Darth Plagueis, their relationship and backstory. This book has excited readers and fans, as it has revealed so much about the Sith characters and stories from the Star Wars universe. The Sith have always intrigued fans, and having a collection of, what reads as notes by Palpatine himself, really helps to lend answers to many of the questions that have been asked. Including questions about the Force Dyad that Palpatine mentions to Rey and Ben Solo in Rise of Skywalker.

It is revealed in the book that Darth Plagueis attempted to create a Force Dyad with Palpatine, but was unsuccessful. Darth Plagueis is a fascinating character that fans really don’t know much about. He never appears in the films, and is only briefly mentioned in Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith during the theater scene between Anakin Skywalker and Senator Palpatine when Palpatine tells the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise, a Sith Lord:
"Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. "He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying."
Obviously, looking back on it, whether the creatives behind the movies meant to or not, this tale is foreshadowing of Palpatine’s own escape from death. Darth Plagueis really did find a way to stop someone from dying and, later on down the road, Palpatine learned how to master the art of Essence Transfer so that he could stay alive even after his body was destroyed.
In Secrets of the Sith, the story, told from Palpatine’s perspective in note form, tells us that along with Darth Plagueis’ work on trying to stop death, he was also very interested in the Force Dyad and tried to create one with Palpatine. Palpatine writes in the book:
“My master, Darth Plagueis, attempted to forge such a bond with me. Though he was wise in the ways of the Force, he proved unworthy of the task. I, too, attempted to facilitate such a connection with my apprentice, Anakin Skywalker. Yet even with the so-called Chosen One at my side, the balance we shared pulled against the perfection of the dyad.”
While the Sith weren’t able to create this phenomenon, Palpatine would be lucky to see it in person at the end of his life. Darth Plagueis was also very interested in the Force Dyad because he was obsessed with immortality and would have been aware of the power to heal someone with that Force, an ability the members of a Force Dyad have. This is the power that Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo use in the final battle of The Rise of Skywalker.
Secrets of the Sith also tells fans that the Sith Rule of Two is related to the Force Dyad and that, in all likelihood, the Sith have been attempting the Force Dyad with their apprentices for centuries, all of them failing. An explanation as to why that could be is found in the novelization of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which suggests that the Force Dyad is created by the will of the Force. It can only be created with both light and dark side presence in the Force. Which then makes sense as to why Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo were able to form such a bond. According to The Rise of Skywalker book, Kylo Ren and Rey had been:
“refined in the fire of mutual searching, shared grief, rage and hate, but also of compassion and empathy.”
Of course, the Sith reject many of these things which means that they could never create a Force Dyad among themselves. Kylo Ren could because he was the only person on the dark side and needed Rey’s light side to complete the Dyad. The Force Dyad is complex, and Star Wars/Lucasfilm still most likely has a few more facets of it that they have yet to release. But one thing is for sure, it is very very powerful and despite all their best efforts, the Sith, though enamored with it, have yet to create a Force Dyad.
