'Star Wars' Has Finally Revealed Han Solo's Father
The topic of fathers in the Star Wars universe has played both big and small rolls throughout the whole franchise. With the most shocking twist and reveal being that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. This topic also includes getting to know more about Leia Organa’s adoptive father, Senator Bail Organa in the prequal trilogy and even the sequel trilogy with Kylo Ren and Rey both grabbling with their parentage. But one character that no one ever imagined we'd learn who their father was is the scruffy looking smuggler, Han Solo. After the film Solo: A Star Wars Story fans were content to leave Han Solo’s origin story at that. That is, at least until the Han Solo & Chewbacca #1 comic released on March 9th of 2022, revealing a man claiming to be Han Solo’s father.
The new comic, Han Solo & Chewbacca #1, written by Marc Guggenheim with art by David Messina, is set shortly after Solo: A Star Wars Story when Han Solo was still taking jobs from Jabba the Hutt. Jabba has Han and Chewie heading back to Han’s home planet of Corellia in search of an urn containing the ashes of one of Jabba’s many enemies. As if that wasn’t bad enough, not only do Han and Chewie have to team up with Greedo (since he was the one who gave Jabba the tip) they will also have to split the reward money with him. Either way, Han isn’t about to let a chance at 500,000 credits go. So, in pure Han Solo fashion that we all know and love, he pulls Greedo aside and tells him,
“… If you try to screw me over, double-cross me, do anything that gives me a bad feeling… I’ll shoot first and ask questions later.”

When the trio sets out for Han’s home planet, they quickly run into an obstacle. Turns out the urn worth a half million credits to Jabba, is locked behind an impregnable safe. While Han thinks of a way to get to the urn, he just so happens to bump into a man working for the CEC. For anyone unfamiliar with Han Solo’s origin story following Solo: A Star Wars Story, Han lived on Corellia, abandoned as a child and lived as a street urchin working for Lady Proxima and the White Worms as a runner. The only thing Han knows of his father was that he built ships for the Corellian Engineering Corporation, also known as CEC. While chatting with this stranger he lets it slip that his father’s name was Ovan, which the man claims to be his name as well and appears to pull Han into an embrace, ending the first chapter released in the Han Solo & Chewbacca comic series. While this could be a chance encounter with Han Solo’s actual father, there is also a high possibility that this is a ploy. With a payout of a million credits, it's no surprise that there are other people after the urn and with the chapter ending on such a cliffhanger, there is no telling if what this man says is true.
With all of the hype surrounding Star Wars films and TV series, its no surprise that we get to see a story featuring everyone’s favorite flying duo in their own comic, Han Solo & Chewbacca. Clearly the writer wanted to keep fans on their feet, and that’s just what Marc Guggenheim did with the introduction of the supposed father of Han Solo. While it's still up in the air whether or not this man is who he claims he is, it’ll keep fans in anticipation until April 27th when the next issue will be released.
