'Star Wars': Chris Pine Teases "Fresh" Story Of 'Rogue Squadron' Movie

Director Patty Jenkins has been enjoying a rise in popularity with the general public over the past few years by directing the groundbreaking Wonder Woman in 2017 and the recent sequel Wonder Woman 1984. With all of that behind her, her focus is now on “A galaxy far, far away”.

Chris Pine sat down with Collider to promote Wonder Woman 1984. There was a bit of a bombshell that dropped during the interview that the film’s director Patty Jenkins mentioned to him the plot of her upcoming Star Wars film Rogue Squadron, presumably inspired by the hugely successful video game franchise, and he thought it was “really great”.

“I had spoken to her about, not my involvement, but the story. She talked to me about it. It sounds really, really great. But I’m ecstatic for her, excited for what she’s about to embark on. If there’s anyone that can reimagine and breathe fresh, new life into it, it’s her.”

Pine has spent the past four years working with Jenkins as WWI Army Air Service pilot Captain Steve Trevor on the two Wonder Woman films for the DCEU and the TNT miniseries I Am The Night. And it's obvious that the two have developed a close working relationship in their time together.

Jenkins was recently announced as the director of the next Star Wars feature film during Lucasfilms’s portion of the Disney Investor Day event on December 10 by President Kathleen Kennedy.

The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal, who is also part of the Star Wars franchise, also worked with Jenkins on Wonder Woman 1984 as he played supervillain Maxwell Lord. Pascal previously praised her and mentioned recently that he would absolutely be open to being involved in her upcoming Star Wars project — or any future project:

"[The team behind Wonder Woman 1984] could have asked me to play a piece of furniture. Charles Roven, the producer, I was working with at the time and he’s a powerhouse of a man and has taken such good care of me. And then Patty, I’m a fan from the very, very first movie, to what she’s done on TV, the first Wonder Woman movie and so, for an actor to get to work with her it doesn’t get better, really. I mean it.”

No casting announcements have been made yet for Rogue Squadron since the film is in early pre-production, but do not be surprised if Pine teams up with her once again for the project.

There is a bit of a backlash with Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 concerning the plot that made the anticipated sequel divided among critics and fans. The film has a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. A huge step down from the 2017 Wonder Woman film's 93 %. To make things more interesting, after the successful streaming and box office numbers of the opening weekend of WW84, Warner Bros. has fast-tracked Woman Wonder 3 for Jenkins to return to direct and write the project.

Jenkins confirmed to Collider that she will be working on Wonder Woman 3, Rogue Squadron, a Cleopatra movie, and more rather than simply focusing on just one.

"All of them really, and I have a TV show, all of them' but I'm super excited to head into... I think they're all great and I continue to push them along and we have sort of plans for what will go first and try to organize how multiple things can happen. We're very far into the — we're finishing the treatment basically, which is pretty big. So, it ends up being like where you're fairly close to a well-along screenplay by the time I'm done with the treatment in my process. So yeah, we've been working on it for a while. It's going great. I'm super excited about it. I'm super excited about the story."

With all of those projects, the Force is clearly on her side.

Rogue Squadron is scheduled for theaters on December 22, 2023.
