'Spider-Man: Freshman Year' Promises A Different World From The MCU
Now that San Diego Comic-Con has been wrapped up for a week we have some more details and clarification on the announcements made. One announcement that left most fans utterly confused was that Spider-Man: Freshman Year would be a precursor to the events in Captain America: Civil War. At base value that seems fitting, when we meet Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War it’s clear he’s been Spider-Man for a bit already so there’s room for a prequel story. Things got a bit confusing when they announced exactly what characters would be involved in the show.
With the likes of Daredevil, Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn and Doctor Strange set to appear in the animated series it left fans wondering how this could be a prequel if Peter never met any of these characters until well after Captain America: Civil War. It appears we finally have our answer as to how this ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new exclusive from Comicbook.com.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, head of Streaming for Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum explained where the series fits into the plethora of MCU content. According to the interview, Freshman Year is a multiversal story that is essentially a what-if due to the effects of the multiverse. It follows the exact beats of Peter Parker’s introduction in Captain America: Civil War but rather than Tony Stark showing up in his apartment, instead it’s Norman Osborn. Winderbaum said this about the series:
"Well, like we said, in the panel, it follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] Civil War….Down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the famous moment where Tony stark is waiting for him to offer him the stark internship and take him to Berlin. But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it's not Tony Stark who's waiting for him there. It's Norman Osborn and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe."
With all that said, the series takes place outside of the main MCU universe with a different Peter Parker than we know. This makes more sense as to why characters that we haven’t seen in the MCU yet such as a fully suited Daredevil or a grown-up Amadeus Cho will be making an appearance in the anticipated series. The show even boasts villains that have yet to meet our Spider-Man such as Scorpion and many more. It will still be canon to the MCU in the same way that the Tobey Maguire/Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies are, existing within another universe.
