Sonic Frontiers keeps making history for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, as it is now the highest-selling 3D Sonic title. During a joint SEGA/Rovio press conference in Helsinki, Finland, it was casually revealed that Sonic’s latest open-zone adventure has sold 3.5 million copies. This exceeds the latest sales data for the previous holder of this title, Sonic Heroes, which sold 3.4 million copies as of 2007. The focus of the press conference was to formally announce SEGA’s acquisition of Rovio and show the planned integration of SEGA and Rovio properties, and this achievement was presented as a part of SEGA’s continued push to continue the title’s momentum.

Furthermore, while a Sonic x Angry Birds crossover was not formally announced, it seemed to be implied by one of the slides. Sonic Frontiers is set to continue to be supported by a variety of free DLC updates, including an expanded story mode written by series veteran and Sonic lore master Ian Flynn making this to be the time to be a fan of the blue blur. The 2020s seem to be quite the comeback decade for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Congratulations to SEGA and Sonic Team for this milestone achievement!
