Coming off the heels of the majorly successful Sonic Frontiers comes a new title in the franchise that sees the blue blur going back to his 2D side-scroller roots. Sonic Superstars debuted at Summer Game Fest to a hugely positive response, and the trailer was uploaded to Sonic the Hedgehog’s YouTube.

Unlike 2017’s Sonic Mania, Sonic Superstars features a 2.5D graphical style featuring fully 3D special stages. Sonic, of course, is playable as always. Tails and Knuckles are playable, and this time, Any Rose will be joining the playable roster. The game features Fang the Sniper as a main antagonist, making his first no-cameo in-game appearance since 1995’s Sonic the Fighters. Sonic Superstar’s story will take place on North Star Island and feature all new chaos emerald powers. Local four-player co-op is also a feature of this game in addition to an online battle mode.

More gameplay has been coming in from its showing at Summer Game Fest. The game appears to faithfully be following the physics of the classic Genesis/MegaDrive titles, but it features all-new stages rather than recycling old stages. It also features a 2D animated intro in the style of the cutscenes from Sonic Origins and the intro from Sonic Mania. Sonic Superstars speeds onto all major consoles in the Fall of this year, and the base game is set to cost $59.99 with a $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition as well.
