Shaunette Renée Wilson From 'Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny' Pushed For Script Changes Over An Offensive Scene
Spoilers For Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny below:
Variety caught up with Shaunette Renée Wilson at the world premiere of the latest and final film of the Indy franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, at the Cannes Film Festival in May. In the interest of preserving the major plot points of the film, Variety chose to run the article after its theatrical release. The Resident actress was chosen by director James Mangold for the role of Agent Mason without an audition. Mangold sent her the script to peruse, and then they met via Zoom to discuss it further. Wilson said her first reaction was “jazzed” and that she was impressed with many things, but she did have some concerns that she raised involving her character specifically.
The actress praised her director for his collaborative nature. Most importantly, she felt heard as Mangold implemented her suggestions in the rewrites. She said, “That has been a wonderful part of this process — to be able to feel like you are integral, and you have a point of view when it comes to what’s being written.” When asked about the specifics of her concerns, she was careful not to give away too much of the movie. The Black Panther actress summarized by saying that “Initially I found it to be a little too offensive and a bit problematic, and I was like, ‘We probably don’t need to say these words or have it done this way, and this is something I’m uncomfortable with.'” Variety reached out to representatives for Disney, Lucasfilm, and James Mangold regarding the rewrites, but it doesn’t appear that they have released commentary yet.

When asked what her takeaway from working with the legendary Harrison Ford, the actress said, “Have fun. You’re never too old to have fun. His inner child is always at play. He loves the craft so much and loves what he does.” Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is currently in theaters.
