Will The Setting of the Fallout TV Series Be New Orleans?

Many fans of the hit video game series, Fallout, are eagerly looking forward to the TV series soon to hit Amazon Prime. While we have not received a lot of information on the Fallout TV show as of yet, we know that Bethesda will be working with Kilter films to bring forth the first real TV adaptation of the hit video game series. Many fans and people have speculated where Fallout 5 will be located, the video game sequel to the hit Fallout 4, but not many have researched or asked where the series will take place. Let’s consider where the series could be set.

There are a few options on where this Fallout show is most likely to happen. One of those options is San Francisco, which already has history in the Fallout series. This starts with Fallout 2, when the Chosen One finds himself in San Francisco and briefly encounters the “Shi”. Kellogg, one of the antagonists of Fallout 4, has memories that the player experiences where he mentions having worked for the Shi in San Fran. You also can see the Golden Gate Bridge out of his window as he talks to his wife. According to “JuiceHead” on YouTube, the Fallout producers removed a line in Fallout 4, mentioning how San Francisco had been wiped off the map. This could support San Francisco being a location of a future Fallout project, but does that mean it is going to be the location of the TV Show? I don’t think so, although the probability is still high.

Another location mentioned a lot is New York. For fans of the Wolfenstein games, we have already seen a nuked New York (albeit not a Fallout version). While this is not a far-fetched idea for a location, there isn’t much evidence supporting it for the TV Show. Another possible location is Chicago, which is mentioned on the voice recordings of ED-E on Fallout: New Vegas, and Chicago has been on the radar of the Fallout fanbase as a location of a Fallout project for sometime now. But I don’t believe that Chicago will be the location of the TV show either.

I have a feeling and belief that the location of the Fallout TV series is New Orleans, Louisiana. Why do I say this? First off, throughout every Fallout game, you have a wide range, variety, and number of cults. New Orleans is known to have several occultic practices happening all over the city. It is a perfect location to follow this trend in a Fallout series, even if the cults of the Fallout universe are not the main drive of the show, I suspect it won’t be.

Everyone is familiar with the general love of Fallout: New Vegas and many know the general feel of the game. Whether it is the many factions and shaping the political landscape, or enjoying time on the New Vegas strip with the lights, sounds, and gambling, there is a different air and vibe to the game. It has its dark and wacky ways about it, but it also has that opposite light side to it, like any good Fallout game. New Orleans would be perfect to mimic, in its own individual way, that same feel. Where you have the dark and twisted shape of a world torn to shreds and put back together in every conceivable way, both morally, physically, and mentally.

But you also have that glimmer of hope, those lights and sounds of a society trying to work, just like New Vegas was attempting while continuing to have those sleazy, under-the-table subversion tactics going on to keep the world in its post-apocalyptic state. What would be a similar yet unique take on this concept that Fallout brings? Bourbon Street. You could have the lights and craziness of Bourbon Street and it still be an easy and distinct post-apocalyptic feel that made a game like Fallout: New Vegas fantastic.

All of these are personal reasons why I think New Orleans should be the location of the Fallout TV show. But what about evidence? Since Bethesda and Kilter films have not made many announcements about the project, there is not a lot to go on. We know that Jonathan Nolan will direct the pilot episode and will executively produce the series with Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham, co-creators of the Westworld series. Nolan is quoted as saying, “"Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends.” A New Orleans scene allows Nolan to participate in creating an “insanely imaginative” story.

Whether it is following any number of cults or the post-apocalyptic world with a 50’s background of lights and colors, you can let the imagination run wild and crazy with a New Orleans vibe. You have the option to add in new mutated creatures, because of the wildlife found in the Louisiana swamps and see how the radiation has affected those waters in the bayou. It would be a prime place for ghouls to be active, which plays into the first cast announcement that was made concerning the show. We know that Walton Goggins is cast and appears to be playing a ghoul in the series.

The idea of a New Orleans set Fallout first appeared when, in Europe in 2016, a trademark file was made for Fallout: New Orleans. The trademark has sense been removed and the idea of that being concrete has been debunked. However due to the potential that a Fallout: New Orleans brings to the series, and what a New Orleans themed Fallout could bring in terms of a familiar yet unique feel to the series, makes it my favored location of the Fallout TV series.

Is this guaranteed to be the case? Of course, it’s not guaranteed, but to me it seems the most likely and would be the most exciting. It also leaves some other locations open to being in a video game with more exploration potential. One thing I do know for sure is that I’m excited to see Fallout in a different way than I have before, with no control and all the adventure and craziness. Production on the TV series begins this year, finally!
