Season 4 Of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Gets A Major Filming Update
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will begin filming season 4 in February 2025, according to James T. Kirk actor Paul Wesley. This news is a bit surprising, considering season 3 still doesn’t have a release date beyond a general “2025” timeframe. A panel at San Diego Comic-Con did show a first-look trailer, specifically showing some of the key members of the Enterprise transforming into Vulcans for a covert mission.
The first two seasons of Strange New Worlds premiered in early summer 2022 and 2023, so seemingly, the third season was anticipated to come out in summer 2024. Of course, when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike disrupted this schedule, the next Strange New Worlds episodes were delayed. CBS Studios and Paramount may wait until June 2025 to bring audiences the new season to get back to the previous scheduling pattern. A premiere date in January or February would be unusual if the date hasn’t been announced yet, although airing season 3 before filming for season 4 begins would be effective for balancing promotional interviews and appearances.

So far, known directors for season 3 are all returning to the show: Jordan Canning, Chris Fisher, and Jonathan Frakes. Fisher is the co-executive producer for Strange New Worlds and has previously directed two of its episodes. Canning has directed one episode of Star Trek before, the Strange New Worlds episode “Charades.” Frakes is best known for his role as William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard, as well as directing multiple movies and shows, both inside the Star Trek universe and removed from it.
Strange New Worlds is a prequel series taking place on Capt. Christopher Pike’s USS Enterprise before Kirk becomes Captain, as seen in Star Trek: The Original Series and subsequent shows, movies, and other media. It was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con a couple of months ago that Frakes will be directing a “Hollywood murder mystery” for the fourth episode of this upcoming season. Other announcements to come out at SDCC: Dr. Roger Korby from The Original Series will be portrayed by Cillian O’Sullivan, season 2’s Martin Quinn (Scotty) will become a series regular, and a new science lab (seemingly a call back to the astrometrics lab in Star Trek: Voyager and Cetacean Ops in Star Trek: Lower Decks) will require an entirely new set.
