Sandy To The Rescue In New Netflix Exclusive 'Spongebob' Movie, 'Saving Bikini Bottom'

As SpongeBob SquarePants continues to entertain audiences worldwide, one of the show’s secondary characters will have a chance to take the reins. Sandy the Squirrel, voiced by Carolyn Lawrence, will take the leading role in the upcoming movie Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, which will be seen exclusively on Netflix. This will be the first time Sandy will be the main character of a movie, despite having been a popular character since the very beginning of the show.
The reason for the Netflix-only release is that it is part of a deal made a few years ago between Netflix and Nickelodeon. Afterward, two other movies focusing on secondary characters from the franchise will be released, in what seems to be an attempt to show these characters in a new light. 2021’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on The Run, was also a streaming exclusive movie, although it was only released that way due to several delays, partially also due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first SpongeBob movie was released back in 2004 and was met with widespread success. Many other movies and spinoffs of the show have been released over the past two decades, with mixed results in both critical and fan response.
