SAG-AFTRA Modifies Their Interim Agreement Policy After Talking With WGA

The interim agreement policy of SAG-AFTRA has been modified to exclude US projects that are covered by the WGA. The decision was made “after several productive and collaborative meetings” with the WGA, which “will assist them in executing their strike strategy.” The change will not “undermine the utility and effectiveness” of SAG-AFTRA’s strategy.
This change means that, from now on, interim agreements will only be issued for projects that are not covered by the WGA. SAG-AFTRA says interim agreements are meant for truly independent productions while these strikes continue, “so that journeymen performers and crew may continue to work and pay their bills while demonstrating to the AMPTP that independent producers are eager to work with [SAG-AFTRA] members under these terms.” Staff of the union “continue to investigate each application” for that reason. Any agreement that was accepted under the previous terms of the agreement will still be honoured.

The statement from SAG-AFTRA’s TV/Theatrical/Streaming Negotiating Committee continues with, “The strike action is evolving each day. We are adapting in real time to continue protecting our members while collaborating with our sister unions in fighting for our common cause. SAG-AFTRA continues to support the Writers Guild of America in its fight to achieve a fair and equitable contract.”
Hollywood is starting to crumble under the pressure of both unions being on strike. At first, it was just the WGA, who have now been on strike for three and a half months. SAG-AFTRA joined them in July, with some already previously joining the picket lines in solidarity with the WGA. With the unions continuing to stand firm and cooperate, it is on the studios under the AMPTP to break the strike with those fair and equitable contracts.
