As the SAG-AFTRA enters the 118th day of the strike, there is hope that a deal with the AMPTP can be reached soon. The biggest hurdle is the potential use of AI technology in movies and television. SAG-AFTRA was worried that the AMPTP’s language allowed them to use a deceased performer’s likeness without the consent of the actor’s estate or SAG-AFTRA. In response, the studios updated the language to try to reach a deal with the actors’ guild.

Another major issue in the strike is minimum rates. SAG-AFTRA asked for an 11% increase while the studios offered 7%. It seems likely that the two sides will settle around 8 or 9% which is less than the initial demand but more than the WGA received from the studios. The studios have also offered a 100% bonus in standard streaming residuals if a performer appears on one of the most-watched shows on the streaming platform.

The AMPTP’s decision to alter the language around the use of AI is the first sign of desperation from the studios. Earlier, they warned SAG-AFTRA that the entire 2024 release schedule is in jeopardy if the strike continues. Warner Brothers Discovery and Disney have their Q4 earnings due this week. With the pressure mounting, AMPTP may be forced to concede to SAG-AFTRA’s AI demands. Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are scheduled to continue on November 8.
