Ryu From 'Street Fighter' Is Now In The 'Power Rangers' Lightning Collection As The Crimson Hawk Ranger
Power Week keeps rolling along on the way to the 29th anniversary of Power Rangers. The day 2 announcement is a Hadouken to all of it. Following yesterday’s Dino Fury season two part two release date and trailer, plus news on Lightning Collection figures for Dino Thunder Yellow, Tuesday’s news was that the next Lightning Collection figure would be Ryu from the Street Fighter video game franchise.
This might be very surprising to even the most casual fan, let alone the completely unaware. Back in 2018, the mobile game Power Rangers Legacy Wars introduced six characters from Street Fighter into the game. It wasn’t all that warmly received. The two biggest additions as playable were Ryu and Chun-Li. Not only were they part of it, but they were given Ranger forms: Ryu the Crimson Hawk Ranger, and Chun-Li the Blue Phoenix Ranger. They’re based in the Mighty Morphin’ team as their Ranger powers come from Power Coins produced by Ninjor. There was even a live-action short produced by Bat in the Sun and Allspark to promote it, with Jason David Frank reprising his role as Tommy Oliver and Ciara Hanna reprising her role as Gia, the Yellow Megaforce Ranger. The characters and their special Ranger forms would make their way to the similar console game Battle for the Grid as paid DLC in May 2021.
The Lightning Collection is Hasbro’s collector 6-inch figure line for Power Rangers, created in 2018 following their purchase of the brand that May. It is similar to the Marvel Legends line and the successor and brand equivalent to the Legacy Collection that the franchise had when Bandai was their toymaker. Ryu as Crimson Hawk Ranger is the 126th revealed figure of the line. It is the first of the Lightning Collection Power Rangers X Street Fighter subset. The figure went up for preorder on the day of writing on Hasbro Pulse’s website that afternoon. With five days of Power Week to come, there can still be some Lightning Collection announcements. There is guaranteed to be more about the franchise in general before the celebration ends with Power Rangers Day on August 28. Stay tuned!
