Ryan Coogler Almost Quit Film Making After The Death Of Chadwick Boseman
After Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing in August 2020, Blank Panther writer and director Ryan Coogler admits publicly he almost chose to quit film making entirely. Coogler said, “I didn’t know if I could make another movie period, [let alone] another Black Panther movie, because it hurt a lot. I was like, ‘Man, how could I open myself up to feeling like this again?’”
With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever coming to theatres on November 11, the movie will honor the legacy of Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa. Recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke with Empire about the decision not to recast T’Challa: “It just felt like it was much too soon to recast…The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan poured that into the story.” As to working with Coogler on where to take the sequel, he said, “The conversations were entirely about, yes, ‘What do we do next?’ and how could the legacy of Chadwick - and what he had done to help Wakanda and the Black Panther become these incredible, aspirational, iconic ideas - continue? That’s what it was all about.”
As Coogler decided to move forward with the highly anticipated sequel, he said, “If I don’t believe in what I’m doing, I’m going to have a hard time getting other people to do their best work…At the end of the day, the choices we make have to feel truthful to me.”
Audiences worldwide can experience Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on November 11.
