Back in September 2024 everything was looking bleak for Rooster Teeth when Warner Brothers Discovery announced they were shutting down content creation at the pioneering studio. Rooster Teeth have been making content since 2003, including shows like Rage Quit and Red vs Blue and RWBY. But it appears that all is not lost. RWBY has been rescued from the chop by VIZ. The viral anime has run for nine seasons and was created by the late, great Monty Oum, who also helped create Red vs Blue.

VIZ have prior knowledge of the series, as they launched the official RWBY manga back in 2018 that ran for three volumes.  They are staying with showrunner Kerry Shawcross, and although Volume 10 has not yet been announced, it’s expected that there will be new adventures for Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang in the near future across print and animation.

RWBY was taken down from YouTube in October 2023 (with Rooster Teeth claiming it wasn’t financially viable anymore) and screened exclusively on the Rooster Teeth website, and subsequently on Crunchyroll in later series. It will be interesting to see if this new deal sees a return to the streaming platform, or if VIZ set their sights on a bigger prize like Netflix, who appear to be buying anime like it’s going out of fashion. The future is full of possibilities.
