Robert Downey Jr. Talks Kevin Feige Pitching Him Doctor Doom
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been buzzing ever since Marvel Studios announced the unexpected casting of Robert Downey Jr. as the villain of the Avengers in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.
On Awards Chatter, a podcast by The Hollywood Reporter, Downey discussed his first conversations with Studio head Kevin Feige. Explained how Feige and himself, along with Jon Favreau, have kept in touch over the last few years and how he had an instinct to meet with Bob Iger on an idea beyond the MCU. He took the concept to Feige and his wife Susan, and Feige said, “‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back…’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’...And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked up this character, and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.”
From there, Feige and Downey met with Iger at his home to pitch the idea to him, and he quickly said, “I like it.” Iger then invited the men to visit Disney’s Imagineering Campus to see what the team could create for the actor.
“You want to talk about two guys that are not easy to have their minds blown, let alone at the same time. What is going on there, right now is so beyond my expectations of what was possible.”
This level of surprise and excitement in the pitch meeting will leave fans eager for more details about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
