Rian Johnson has stated in an interview with Empire that he would love to get back to the galaxy far, far away for the trilogy of movies that were announced to be under his helm five years ago.

After the positive experiences of making Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Johnson pitched a trilogy to Lucasfilm with the intent to “go somewhere new, meet some new folks, tell a new story.” However, with the words of Bob Iger that Star Wars films would be taking a breather in 2018, the trilogy has remained as nothing but a pitch since that time.

Johnson’s words come at a time when he is currently working on a different trilogy of films. Knives Out was released in 2019, seeing commercial success and the attention of Netflix. Having bought the rights, the streaming company issued two sequels to be made. Though his attention has been on these sequels, it is clear that Johnson has been thinking of that trilogy within the Star Wars universe.

However, even after he is done with the Knives Out films, it will be several years before this trilogy gets its first release. Kathleen Kennedy revealed earlier in the year to Empire how it would take three to five years to see the project get up and running once work started on it.

While this trilogy of films is still a lightyear away, Star Wars fans are certainly not starved of content, with numerous TV series coming to Disney+ such as Ahsoka and The Bad Batch, along with other feature films such as Rogue Squadron.
