'Star Wars' Fan Finds Copy Of Cancelled 'Battlefront III' Game

Star Wars: Battlefront III

Star Wars: Battlefront III is one of those things lost to time and what might have been if George had not sold Lucasfilm to Disney. The third entry in the most beloved Star Wars game series would have been the next big update in the first-person shooter story. However, it was not to be. Everyone thought the game was lost in the chaos of the sale of Lucasfilm (and by extension LucasArts) to Disney. However, recent development revealed that the game may not be lost completely. Something had been unearthed.

It was just revealed on Reddit that a Star Wars fan may have found one of the few, if not the only, discs of Star Wars: Battlefront III for the PSP, the so-called playset copy. According to the said fan, the game was very much playable and in working order, from galactic conquest to the story campaign to instant action. It was a fun shock to discover that this particular demo existed. This fan was one of the few people in the world who got a taste of a future that had not yet seen a game that never saw the light of day.

Battlefront III would always be that game that is an enigma to many Star Wars fans. It was going to be the thing that revolutionize the Star Wars: Battlefront games. With Battlefront II adding space combat and heroes to the game, Battlefront III planned to combine space and ground combat, creating a super battlefield the likes of which had not been seen in other stories.

Of course, Lucasfilm in those final years was in a bit of a state of confusion. They were lots of production going in and out, and the engines were not stable enough to make games. In some parts, the technology was not there just yet. Sadly, Battlefront III remained in a state of constant development limbo for the most part. This was why a lot of the games never made it to the latest consoles at the time. It was a missed opportunity when video games back in the mid-2000s were experimenting with new ideas.

It would be interesting to see just what the game was like, especially in comparison to today’s games. After all, just because Lucasfilm was trying to be experimental did not mean that the experiment was not a success. There were still a lot of issues to be had with Battlefront at the time. Even Battlefront II was still behind some of the other more mainstream games coming out at the time. It was possible that Battlefront III would not be as advanced as some of the other games coming out around the projected time. Compared to today’s games, Battlefront III does look a bit dated, graphics-wise.

At the end of the day, Star Wars: Battlefront III was a relic of the days long past, a timeline that never was. Would it have been interesting to see this game made? Star Wars gaming is now just starting to revamp after the Disney buyout. It would be interesting to see how this game would have been received. Would it have pushed the boundaries of gaming or would it just be another game in a sea of video games made by other companies? No one can say for sure, but it is an interesting glance through the looking-glass at a galaxy far, far away that could have been.
