Sony announced there would be a tech update video coming this past Tuesday. Many in the industry were sure it would be the announcement of the PS5 Pro since it had all but been confirmed to be coming. And they were right. Tuesday morning, Playstation’s Mark Cerny, the lead PS5 architect, released a video showing off the PS5 Pro to the world.

He also revealed it would cost $700 in the United States, and more elsewhere.

Sticker shock aside, the new PS5 Pro, following in the footsteps of its predecessor Pro version in the PS4, has an upgraded GPU with more Compute Units allowing for faster processing. It also boasts of more advanced Ray Tracing. Ray Tracing; for the uninitiated, is a modern visual effect that mimics photons in the real world, allowing games to display clearer textures, crisp reflections, and more true-to-life lighting effects. It will also feature Playstation Spectral Super Resolution using AI that will upscale textures in the game to add to the clarity. It’s 4K fidelity without actually hitting 4K resolution.

This advanced system brings PS5 Game Boost, which will help enhance the 8,500 PS4 backward-compatible games that can be played on PS5. This can stabilize or enhance the quality of the older games. Some newer games and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will feature a PS5 Pro Enhanced label on them, making them look even better and perform smoother.

This is, again, no surprise given the way the industry has gone the last few life cycles, but it is a hefty price tag for what is unlikely to be much of a noticeable difference for most gamers. With the PlayStation 6 already in development, it does make some question if this was even necessary, especially with not a large library to support it. This system is discless, but people can buy the additional 4K Blu-Ray player, but that’s also 80 dollars, and with taxes, that puts this machine at close to $850 with the added player, a steep price for any gamer with a system that’s only really 4 years old.

The new system will be released this November 7, and Pre-Orders start September 26.
