Bungie, best known for developing the Halo and Destiny franchises, is now officially under the Sony umbrella. The deal, which ended up reaching “approximately $3.7 billion”, was initially announced in January and was finalized this week.

What does this mean for the future of Bungie projects? So far, there appears to be no cause for concern; according to Bungie’s CEO and developer team, Bungie will retain creative and publishing independence, and future games released will not be PlayStation exclusives.

“Bungie retains full creative independence for our games and our community,” stated Joe Blackburn and Justin Truman, members of the Destiny development team. “Bungie’s commitment to cross-platform play and social features remains unchanged. We believe games are best shared with friends, wherever they choose to play, and will continue to invest in new features and platforms.”

Similarly, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons had this to say: “In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart…we will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.“

This announcement came right around the same time Microsoft announced that it would be acquiring Activision, but that $68.7 billion deal has not yet been finalized.
