Pedro Pascal Says 'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Could Cross Over Multiple Timelines

According to IndieWire, actor Pedro Pascal, well-known to Star Wars fans everywhere now as Din Djarin aka "The Mandalorian" from the hit Disney+ show of the same name, says that there could be some timeline jumps in the show's setting during the third season of of the show, currently set to premiere sometime in 2022. Here are his exact words:

“I am told what’s happening and what the plan is, but I can’t share it. They are in the expansion of this world, where there are so many unexpected surprises and timelines that are going to be dealt with. If the character were to cross over into these worlds, it will be utilized in a way that isn’t meant to be expected. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise of whether or not characters from the show we already know are crossing over.”

While Pascal has been unable to reveal any specific details, of course, these jumps in the timeline could have some major implications in terms of the potential characters and storylines Din might be a part of, especially with all of the new Disney+ Star Wars shows currently in production that are set to take place between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, the same time frame in which The Mandalorian has taken place so far.

What we know so far is that there will be a spin-off Disney+ show involving the character of Ahsoka Tano, who made her live-action debut during this past season of The Mandalorian, apparently seeking Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was brought into canon through the animated Star Wars Rebels series. That series also introduced "The World Between Worlds," Star Wars' answer to the possibility of time travel. At the conclusion of that series, Ahsoka was brought through there by young Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger, who, along with Grand Admiral Thrawn, disappeared during that series' conclusion. Ahsoka and Rebels character Sabine Wren (who is also Mandalorian) made a vow to find Ezra, which will almost surely involving finding Grand Admiral Thrawn as well.

Disney+ is also developing a Rangers of the New Republic series set around the time of The Mandalorian and involving unspecified characters. There are few details about this series, but my personal theory is that it may involve some of the X-Wing pilots that have shown up during the first and second season of The Mandalorian patrolling the Outer Rim of the galaxy and serving more or less as scouts and/or some form of law enforcement for the New Republic. It could also heavily involve the character of Cara Dune, the ex-Rebel shock trooper who has occasionally supported Din during the past two seasons of The Mandalorian in his quest to protect Grogu and find a Jedi to train him. In the middle of season 2, she was apparently "deputized" as a Marshal for the New Republic on Nevarro by one of the aforementioned X-Wing pilots. She even used her newfound access to New Republic databanks to help Din break out an ex-Imperial sharpshooter to save Grogu toward the end of season 2.

Perhaps one of the most tantalizing possibilities that has been speculated include an event that brings in Luke Skywalker and Grogu and maybe even introduces Mara Jade, a Legends character who initially served the Emperor and was fated to kill Luke Skywalker but saved him instead, and later became a Jedi in her own right and even married Luke Skywalker. How that might all work in canon is anybody's guess. However, given that I actually named myself after Mara Jade because of my love of her character, I would personally be deliriously happy to see her brought into the current Star Wars canon in some form or another. I suspect that many other fans of hers would as well. This may be the wildest possibility yet, but as the creative team behind Star Wars continues to prove over and over again, anything is possible.

All of this is not even to mention the possibility of the series providing more connective tissue between the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy, which is still largely unexplored territory in the timeline. This could potentially allow for Din to encounter characters that become major players in the sequel trilogy such as Snoke, who is introduced as the Supreme Leader of the First Order in The Force Awakens, and whose status as a creation of Emperor Palpatine was revealed to Kylo Ren in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. His possible presence may have been hinted at in the fourth episode of season 2, where Din and company find mysterious Snoke-like figures in what appear to be medical tanks in an Imperial facility. There may be be some potential for interaction with a still-nascent First Order, which, at this point in the timeline, is slowly building up its presence in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, but with the galaxy slowly becoming more aware as it gets closer to the time of the sequel trilogy.

Aside from all of all these other possibilities, the conclusion of season 2 also hinted that Din may have a new "quest" ahead of him. Since he safely delivered Grogu to Luke Skywalker's care and claimed the Darksaber from Moff Gideon in last season's finale, Din may decide to join forces with Bo-Katan and her fellow Mandalorians in their quest to reclaim Mandalore, which has been hinted to have been previously devastated by the Galactic Empire around the time of the original trilogy. It is even possible that Ahsoka may become part of this storyline as well, given her previous involvement in helping Bo-Katan free Mandalore from the late Sith warrior Darth Maul, who had previously claimed Mandalore for his own at the end of the Clone Wars. That storyline was recently chronicled in the final arc of the surprise seventh season of the hit animated series, The Clone Wars.

Suffice it to say, Pascal's hints about jumps in and around the post-original trilogy Star Wars timeline surely make for some interesting possibilities that have the potential for dramatically expanding the current Star Wars universe, as well as the show in general. I for one am very eager to jump back into The Mandalorian and see what exciting adventures are to come.
