Paizo, The Company Behind Pathfinder, Releases Its Own Open Game License In Response To Wizards Of The Coast's Disastrous OGL 1.1
The Dungeons & Dragons world was rocked with the news regarding Wizards of the Coasts and the state of the Open Game License or OGL, the company maintains. The Hasbro subsidiary had their proposed reform draft for the OGL leaked. The implications of the draft caused an outcry of protests within the fandom, with many taking issue with the possible new content use restriction.
Some people were upset enough to cancel their subscriptions to D&D Beyond, sending a message to the staff of the site. Functionality was even disrupted due to traffic generated. More than just the fans and consumers have formulated a response as well. The publishing company Paizo, who produced the D&D spinoff Pathfinder, has developed an Open RPG Creative License (ORC) that is “system neutral” and “open, perpetual, and irrevocable.”

This ORC will not be “owned by any company who makes money publishing RPGs,” including Paizo themselves. It will be an open-source product, and the eventual owner they’re looking for will be a “nonprofit with a history of open-source values.” This is all an effort to create protection for the license and its open-source design.
Check out the tweet below for more details on what Paizo is up to. Time will only tell about the direction that things will move. At this early in the game, nothing is for certain, though Paizo’s move keeps hope alive.
