The rock star biopic genre has become quite popular in the last decade, but one act that has not really gotten the big biopic treatment is The Beatles (aside from a few in the past that only focused on select moments in their life such as 2009’s Nowhere Boy). This is set to soon change, though, as Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes has been tapped to direct not just one or two but four movies about The Beatles with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Mendes’ own studio, Neal Street Productions, each focusing on one member of the band.

This is a huge first, as this is the first time a film has been granted the rights to the full life story and music of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The grand vision was conceived by Mendes, and these four films will tell an interconnected story from the perspective of each Beatle. Mendes is set to lock down writers soon, and the release window is set for 2027, with the exact release schedule to be revealed at a later date.

The director had this to say regarding the upcoming project:

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

Ringo Starr expressed his excitement for the film on his X feed:

Not only has these films received the blessings of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in addition the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison, but the company that handles the legacy of The Beatles, Apple Corps, have also given the project the go ahead, with Jeff Jones acting as the executive producer for the company. Mendes will also produce the film alongside Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. A splendid time is guaranteed for all four of these FAB-ulous films!
