Only 10% Of Planets In The New Bethesda IP 'Starfield' Have Life, Confirms Todd Howard
Even after the Starfield Direct, there are plenty of unknown details about the game. Luckily, Todd Howard accepted an interview by Kinda Funny Games, where he shared valuable information about Starfield. Todd emphasized the thrilling possibilities for players to discover. Starfield will allow players to adventure throughout the vast expanse of the Milky Way. With a thousand planets to explore, even in one of Bethesda's open-world video games, it's a lot for a single player to cover. Following the initial release of No Man's Sky, some players are concerned about how generated worlds will impact Starfield.
Todd Howard would go on to say, "Obviously it's procedural, so there's no way we're going to go and handcraft an entire planet," Todd clarified, "What we do is we handcraft individual locations and some of those are placed specifically, the main cities and other quest locations, and then we have a suite of them that are generated or placed when you land depending on that planet.”

Unlike Mass Effect 2, players won’t be exploring each planet by sending down probes for resources. Instead, the player will venture down to each planet’s surface as an explorable area. Each planet will have generated resources and handcrafted locations to explore. Many players will have the option to build outposts on many of the planets that they discover. Todd has assured players that even the most barren of worlds has something desirable. This can be in the form of resources, prime real estate, or even a place for the player to lose themselves.
Starfield has a total of one thousand planets, and ten percent of them have the potential to support life. Exploration is the core of Starfield after the story is all said and done. Aside from becoming a space pirate helping Constellation reach its exploratory goals, players can customize their ships and outposts with what they find out in the Milky Way galaxy.
