'One Piece' Creator Eiichiro Oda Provides Fans With Update About The Future Of The Live-Action Series

Netflix has been working on an adaptation of the popular manga One Piece since 2020 with no signs of finishing. But Creator Eiichiro Oda posted a letter on Instagram this week saying fans will finally get to see Monkey D. Luffy and his crew sail the Blue Sea this year. The post reveals that the series will be eight episodes and that Oda has personally overseen the production.

Oda is notoriously careful with his masterpiece, especially regarding making sure the clever wordplay translates across the language barrier. Expect the script to be flawless. Heavy hitter, Matt Owens has signed on to write for the series, and he has worked on some of Marvel’s biggest projects, such as Marvel’s Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Steven Maeda is reportedly acting as executive producer for the project and he has a similarly impressive pedigree, having worked on Lost, Pan-Am, and The X-Files.

Castings have already been announced and Iñaki Godoy (The Imperfects) is playing the lead role of Monkey D. Luffy. Mackenyu Maeda (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami (Hunters, Dynasty), Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) as Usopp, and Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) as Sanji.

Netflix has a hit-and-miss record with manga adaptations (don’t mention Death Note) but One Piece looks very impressive. A short teaser released in June of last year demonstrates how heavily the streaming service has invested in the show. The showrunners have opted for large expensive open-air custom-built sets in South Africa, over studio and CGI. This ensures that One Piece will be a stunning visual spectacle, just like the manga.
