Five Things You Don't Know About Tatooine

“If there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from."

Those words are how Luke Skywalker described his home planet of Tatooine, one of the most iconic planets in the Star Wars galaxy. Home of Anakin and Luke Skywalker, it has appeared in every Star Wars trilogy as well as other spin-off material and books as well. Over the years, the planet of Tatooine has been expanded upon as the once desert world has held many facets  So without further ado, here are five things about the planet that Luke and Anakin once called home. These are five facts about Tatooine.

It Was A Water Planet

Many people see Tatooine as the OG desert planet of the Star Wars galaxy. It is made up of vast desert as far as the eye could see. However, what many people may not know is that its origin was far different than what it is today. For one, Tatooine was once a water planet. It was a place filled with water and life. According to Legends, the planet suffered a terrifying catastrophe by the Infinite Empire, the original civilization of Star Wars. In the current canon it is unknown how the planet changed, but it has been mentioned that Tatooine was once filled with water.

Hutt Paradise

Another thing about the planet Tatooine is that despite being considered a planet of nothing, it was the home of one of the most powerful crime lords of all time, Jabba the Hutt. It has always been an odd thing that the Huts would be interested in a very isolated planet or that one of the most powerful crime bosses of all time would live there. However, the Hutts have always had an interest on Tatooine, from the podracing to the spice smuggling.

Tusken Origin

When we first see Tatooine, we see the moisture farmers of Luke and his family. The Tusken Raiders in A New Hope are just another species that seem to live on the planet. However, as we learn from The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the Tusken Raiders are the native indigenous species of the planet. They have lived on this desert world for thousands of years, surviving on their own off the land and the desert. There are several tribes of them, and they have dealt with various settlers and criminals who have harassed them over the centuries. It would go to show why they can be a bit defensive.

Moisture

In A New Hope, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru are moisture farmers, the most common vocation among Tatooine settlers, outside of crime and smuggling. While there is no water on the planet there is a lot of moisture. It seems to be common practice, but also it seems like a major business within the place. Moisture seems to be a good market, so long as you pay up to the crime lords of Tatooine, that is.

Home Of Legends

As obvious it might be for many, Tatooine is the home of Luke, Anakin, and Shmi Skywalker. It is also the final resting place of the Skywalker clan. It is here that both major Skywalkers left in order to go off into the galaxy. It is where they grew up, and spent most of their lives, especially in Luke’s case. Tatooine might be one of the furthest planets away from the sun, but that does not mean great people cannot come from them.

Tatooine is a strange planet, it is both nothing and everything all at the same time. It is as mysterious and majestic as it is harsh and dangerous. It is filled with wonders and monsters, heroes and villains, and people who can shape the galaxy far, far away.
