New Report From 'The Wrap' Details The Top Superhero Movie Franchises

Hollywood is fluctuating with the ongoing strike from the Writers Guild of America and the mild faltering appeal of superhero content in recent years. Marvel Studios remains in the lead compared to DC Studios, with their Phase Five just beginning to take off and Phase Six moving forward into development; however, much is left to be seen as James Gunn’s new era of films makes its debut in the coming years.

And from this cultural landscape, The Wrap released a report by Parrot Analytics ranking the top six in-demand superhero franchises with audiences between 2018 and 2022. For context, Parrot Analytics defined “in-demand” as “the combined desire, engagement, and viewership for each franchise on social media website along with audience activity on free streaming sites and information sources like Wikipedia.”

The lead superhero property is Marvel Studios Avengers. 2018 and 2019’s Avengers: Infinity Wars and Avengers: Endgame earned close to $5 billion in box office revenue. In a close second, Spider-Man is the second most “in-demand” property, with the friendly-neighborhood Spider-Man’s last outing in theatres with Spider-Man: No Way Home earning just under $2 billion globally.

In third place was Batman, primarily due to The Batman, released in 2022, earning $771 million at the box office. Thor holds fourth place after 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is understandable as he is one of the last remaining Avengers with a viable franchise to navigate for potentially another trilogy of films. The X-Men and Deadpool characters round out the fifth and sixth spots, to which fans are eager to find out how Kevin Feige plans to integrate these two Sony worlds into his Marvel Cinematic Universe through Phase Six and Seven.
