New Leaked Set Photos From 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series Show Filming Is Underway

If there's one thing that both detractors and fans of the prequel films can agree on as a positive, it's Ewan McGregor's performance as the most iconic Jedi knight of all time, Obi-Wan Kenobi. (Sorry, Yoda.) Despite his lack of material to work with in The Phantom Menace, by the time Attack of the Clones hit theaters, it was clear that everyone's favorite Jedi was going to be one of the diamonds in the rough. McGregor seemed truly invested in his character and seemed to be having the most fun until Ian McDiarmid got to really let loose once Emperor Palpatine took over.

So, naturally, it made sense that when Disney took over and planned TV miniseries for every single character to ever appear in a Star Wars anything, Obi-Wan would get his own show. So far, not much is known about the six-episode miniseries due to be released on Disney+ at some point in 2022. Thankfully, McGregor will return to the role that he hasn't played since 2005's Revenge of the Sith. It will be interesting to see what his performance will look like after over 15 years away from the character.

While we don't have too much to go off of as of yet, we do know that the series has started filming. A trio of photos from the set has been leaked, giving us the barest hints of what we'll be getting.

The first picture shows sand and a bantha, a creature native to Tatooine. It's not a huge shock that the show will take place (either entirely or in part) on the desert planet, which is where we met Obi-Wan for the first time in A New Hope. It makes sense that Disney and Lucasfilm would want to show us a bit of what he was up to between Sith and Hope. It's unlikely that he spent almost 20 years playing billions of games of tic-tac-toe with himself.

The second picture shows what appears to be a rebel Y-wing bomber. (Author's note: I could be totally wrong about this, so if I am, feel free to correct me.) If this is a Y-wing, this could indicate that rebel cells have started to at least poke around Tatooine, maybe even looking for Obi-Wan himself. Obi-Wan will undoubtedly be taking on the Empire in some form, so it's not a huge stretch to think that he's going to bump into members of what will become the Rebel Alliance.

And that pic... er... there's sand and stuff. Blue screen. A set.

So far, nothing with the actors, main or supporting, has been seen in these, but as we get closer and closer to the actual release date, there will undoubtedly be more pictures leaked to the public. Hopefully no story beats, but Disney and Lucasfilm like to play that stuff close to the chest anyway. It's already been revealed that Hayden Christensen, the actor who played Anakin Skywalker in the latter two prequel films, will be returning to the role for the series, which makes it likely that Obi-Wan and Darth Vader will have some interaction in the series, something that would be a HUGE misstep in this author's humble opinion, as it would diminish their meeting in A New Hope

Maybe they won't interact at all, and there will just be some close calls. I hope that's it.

Now that TV shows are getting the budgets of mid-sized movies, it's possible that we'll see a side of Tatooine that we have never experienced before. We'll definitely get a new cast of quirky, interesting characters to meet. Centered around all of it will be McGregor's performance as the with the weight of the galaxy on his shoulders as he thinks back on what once was.
